On May 1st 2010 I decided to start something a little crazy – the 100 Burpee Challenge! If you don’t know what that is here’s a quick explanation: Starting on day one, do one burpee. On day two, do two burpees and so on. Do this for 100 days in a row. So on the 100th day you’ll do 100 burpees. When you complete the challenge you will have done a total of 5050 burpees! Here’s the kicker though. If you miss a day, you have to make it up the following day. So if you miss day 60, on day 61 you have to do 60 burpees and 61 burpees. I told you this was a little crazy.
Why am I doing this? I wanted to do something that I could be held accountable for and that would help me get in better condition. This challenge totally meets those criteria. I want to see if consistent effort will equal better results. I suspect that it will.
To measure where I was when I started, on day one I did 100 burpees and timed myself. (Just in case you are wondering, here is some information about me: I am 78” tall and weigh about 210 pounds right now.) It took me 10 minutes and 44 seconds. I did 20 in a row before I had to stop and catch my breath. In five minutes I did 52. At 10 minutes I had done 92. For never attempting that before, I thought that those numbers were pretty decent. But there is definitely room for improvement.
So to check my progress as I go along, I will post a video of me doing the challenge on day 25, 50, 75 and 100. My goal is to do 100 burpees in less than 5 minutes. That’s a pretty lofty goal I know. But I want to push myself and see if I can do it.
Today is day 25 of the challenge so here is the video of me doing 25 burpees as fast as I can:
A couple of notes about the video: I did this in my house. Instead of clapping at the top I touched the ceiling. I touched my chest to the floor each time. I did this in one take – if I would have screwed up there was no turning back. I know that my head is cut off when I am jumping up but I was by myself and didn’t know how to avoid that. Oh well.
Not too bad but I know that going forward that the number per day is starting to get tougher. The next video that I’ll post is on day 50. If you want to start the 100 Burpee Challenge I say do it! It definitely is challenging. Not many people have the will power or stick-to-itiveness to finish so be one of the few that accomplish this goal. Get going today and let me know the results.
