The 100 Burpee Challenge – A Case Study (Part 1 of a 4 Part Series)

On May 1st 2010 I decided to start something a little crazy – the 100 Burpee Challenge! If you don’t know what that is here’s a quick explanation: Starting on day one, do one burpee. On day two, do two burpees and so on. Do this for 100 days in a row. So on the 100th day you’ll do 100 burpees. When you complete the challenge you will have done a total of 5050 burpees! Here’s the kicker though. If you miss a day, you have to make it up the following day. So if you miss day 60, on day 61 you have to do 60 burpees and 61 burpees. I told you this was a little crazy.

100 burpee challenge[You'll feel like a real champ if you complete this challenge. And you should because it will be hard. So rise up and meet the challenge!]

Why am I doing this? I wanted to do something that I could be held accountable for and that would help me get in better condition. This challenge totally meets those criteria. I want to see if consistent effort will equal better results. I suspect that it will.

To measure where I was when I started, on day one I did 100 burpees and timed myself. (Just in case you are wondering, here is some information about me: I am 78” tall and weigh about 210 pounds right now.) It took me 10 minutes and 44 seconds. I did 20 in a row before I had to stop and catch my breath. In five minutes I did 52. At 10 minutes I had done 92. For never attempting that before, I thought that those numbers were pretty decent. But there is definitely room for improvement.

So to check my progress as I go along, I will post a video of me doing the challenge on day 25, 50, 75 and 100. My goal is to do 100 burpees in less than 5 minutes. That’s a pretty lofty goal I know. But I want to push myself and see if I can do it.

Today is day 25 of the challenge so here is the video of me doing 25 burpees as fast as I can:

A couple of notes about the video: I did this in my house. Instead of clapping at the top I touched the ceiling. I touched my chest to the floor each time. I did this in one take – if I would have screwed up there was no turning back. I know that my head is cut off when I am jumping up but I was by myself and didn’t know how to avoid that. Oh well.

Not too bad but I know that going forward that the number per day is starting to get tougher. The next video that I’ll post is on day 50. If you want to start the 100 Burpee Challenge I say do it! It definitely is challenging. Not many people have the will power or stick-to-itiveness to finish so be one of the few that accomplish this goal. Get going today and let me know the results.

Cool video too ( would be nice you throw a bit a music in while I’m watching the Burps ..haha )…
The first few always seem so easy then Whoa it kicks in.
I wont do it yet cause of my program but I’ll consider it in the near future cause I think its one of the best body weight exercises out there.

      Raymond,

That was the first video I ever made and posted on YouTube! I will try and spice them up in the future. Maybe I’ll just play some music in the background. The first 20 were okay but the last five sucked! What is 50 of those suckers going to look like?

Egads, man! 100 burpees? I might need to take a couple days off if I were to attempt that. (Especially attempting to do them straight through.) Congrats on making it this far and I look forward to following your torture, I mean progress. :-)

      Darrin,

Come on. It’s gonna be fun! Right? I guess I’ll find out. I’m guessing the end is really going to suck.

    David,
That’s one heck of a challenge. I’ll be curious how fast you achieve your goal using this method. It seems similar to Pavel’s grease the groove method for increasing pullups and pushups. If you keep repeating, you’re bound to get better. Best of luck with this torture!

      Dave,

If I wasn’t clear I’ll be doing burpees everyday. The goal is to 100 in under 5 minutes. This challenge should build up a lot of endurance so hopefully I’ll meet my goal.

      Drew,

You know you could do it too. But I am sure on day 90 I’ll be thinking “what the hell was I thinking?!”
