These days, look anywhere and you are likely to find something related to exercise. Whether it is a large Globo-Gym, a 24 hour access exercise boutique, a yoga studio or an infomercial on television the evidence that the fitness industry is growing is pretty apparent. But with that growth comes a question: What in the hell do I do to get fit?
Your Body: All The Equipment You’ll Ever Need
What do you do when you need to screw something together and you don’t have a screwdriver? You improvise. You use what you have available. You make something work or invent a way to get it screwed together. Some of the best improvisers were people who used to be in prison, you know, convicts. Why? They had the time to think over a problem and limited resources to work with. That’s why they were, surprisingly, some of most inventive people around.
They had to invent ways to workout in their cells. If they were in lock-down, they wouldn’t be getting out into the yard to use the free weights. They had to improvise and use what they had available to workout. Usually the only thing available was their body. So they spent their time exercising with their body weight and the results they got were incredible.
Body Weight Exercises Take A Minute To Learn And A Lifetime To Master
The exercise program Convict Conditioning is something that you need to consider. Don’t let the convict/prison angle bother you. I judge something on whether or not it delivers solid information. This book does just that. The book goes over why body weight exercises are the ideal exercises for building functional strength, developing a better looking physique and helping normalize and regulate body fat levels. And best of all, you already have all the equipment you need at no cost.
Even if your goal is to only to perform 5 push ups and 1 pull up, you will get valuable information to help you achieve that goal. Make no doubt about it though, certain body weight exercises can be extremely difficult. But they shouldn’t be something that you can’t do. Convict Conditioning focuses on “The Big Six” – the push up, the pull up, the squat, bridging, the leg raise, and handstand push ups. If you can’t do these right now, that is okay. There are some fantastic progressions in the book that you follow to build up strength so you can.
Fancy Gyms and Shiny Machines Don’t Make You Fit
Think back to ancient times. The Greeks and Romans. Do you think that they had fancy gyms to go to and shiny equipment to exercise on? Heck no. They had nothing like that. The size of the gym or the newness of the machine in that gym has zero impact on your level of fitness. None whatsoever. So why are gyms so popular? Part of it is marketing. Part of it is convenience. Part of it is the social aspect. But again, none of those really help you get in better shape. You have to do the work to get the results.
In fact I would argue that the “hole in the wall”, “underground” or “warehouse” gym will provide you with a better workout environment than Globo-Gym. By environment I mean that the gym exists for one reason: for you to exercise in. That’s it. All killer no filler. And if the gym is lacking equipment, that is never used as an excuse to not work out. Because you always have one piece of equipment with you at all times – your body.
You Already Own The Best Machine Ever Invented
We are so lucky to get, for FREE, the greatest machine ever made in the history of the Universe. I’m talking about your body. The human machine. An incredible collection of cells and molecules and muscles that is under our command. To do what we tell it to, when we want it to, whenever we want it to – too bad our kids don’t do that!
But this machine is also the most abused machine ever invented. We take for granted what we get for free and discount what we really got. We abuse and neglect our bodies then wonder why we feel sick all the time and get sore after playing softball over the weekend. It’s because we don’t exercise enough in the right ways and take care of ourselves.
Never Put Yourself In Danger By Being Too Weak
If you can’t do a single push up right now you could be in danger during an emergency. If you can’t do a pull up then you could potentially be putting your life in the hands of someone else. So get mad and take action to fix it. Convict Conditioning delivers an enormous amount of information on how you can start using your body to increase your strength and your health. So don’t get turned off by the title of the book. I don’t think that prison is glamorous or chic. Just give the book a chance and use the incredible information to start your own conditioning program that you can use throughout your life.

Hey David,
I read the book and the one thing I particularly like is the slow progression. Slow continuous progress = success. You go from position to position only after achieving 20 reps.
I’ve already began using this philosophy for ex. doing handstand push ups.

Yavor,
Yep. It’s like “greasing the groove.” Getting that muscle memory built up so that your form is good and your body knows what to do before you add a ton of reps. It really makes sense when you think about it.

David, great post man – people often do overthink the whole process of getting in shape and forget what the real factor is … hard work! Forget the infomercials and crappy exercise gimmicks – bust your butt and results will follow. Great posts, look forward to reading more from ya!
Craig,
Overthinking what to do is sometimes problematic. Analysis paralysis. Just do something! And when you do work hard at it. Yep, bust your butt. And Burpess will do just that. I’ll find out when as this 100 day Burpee Challenge unfolds. I am shooting for under 5 minutes on the 100th day.
